Description

Bethel was the Prime Contractor for the design and construction of this two-bay, 23,000 SF Corrosion Control Hangar supporting Low-Observable and Composite Repair Maintenance for F-22 Aircraft. A tightly controlled environment is required for the removal and application of the external coatings that allows the F-22 Raptor to remain undetectable to radar, so this facility included extensive mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and control systems.

Construction of the project consisted of a concrete foundation that met Alaska’s seismic and frost heaving requirements, a structural steel frame with metal foam-core panels applied as exterior cladding, two medium-bay hangars, an attached corrosion control shop/paint storage/mixing facility, a low-observable training area, and a tow way/access apron for aircraft. The project included secure work areas, fire suppression/detection, an intrusion detection system, environmental controls, paving, parking, Priority Level 3 Security Requirements, and all necessary supporting equipment for a complete and usable government facility. Antiterrorism/force protection measures were also incorporated into the design. This project required precise coordination with the US Air Force as the adjacent two-bay facility was fully operational and on an active flight-line.

Site-civil and ancillary work included data communications, wet and dry utility extensions, radiant-heat/snow-melt apron system, approach roads, and connections to active flight-line. Features included a combination Portland cement concrete (PCC) and asphalt concrete hangar access apron, vehicle access roadway with security gate, access control, security fence, utilities, fire protection waterline loop, storm drainage, roof drain system, and force protection.

This facility was designed and built to meet LEED Silver certification requirements.
