Biannual compliance sampling is part of the compliance-related cleanup project plans for both the Camp Zama Old Landfill (CZOL) and the Logistics Readiness Center (LRC) Gas Station at Camp Zama, Japan. CZOL is a reclaimed landfill and currently supports a golf driving range, skeet range, and other uses. The landfill handled solid waste and other waste streams from 1947 to 1995. Compliance monitoring at the landfill includes both groundwater and soil vapor sampling with the purpose of maintaining an understanding of groundwater and landfill conditions on an ongoing basis. The LRC gas station was constructed in 1988 with four underground storage tanks (USTs), which became the source of contamination at the site. The USTs were replaced in 2012 with aboveground storage tanks (ASTs). Compliance monitoring of groundwater is performed to assess the impact of an historical release of petroleum to groundwater resources and the likelihood of offsite migration of contaminants. Bethel performed compliance monitoring in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Sampling and analyses were conducted following approved Sampling and Analysis Plans. Groundwater samples from the CZOL were analyzed for water quality parameters, volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and dioxins. Soil vapor samples from the CZOL were analyzed for methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, oxygen and nitrogen. Groundwater samples from the LRC were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons. Depth to groundwater at both sites were measured to determine the gradient and direction of groundwater flow. Bethel performed project management, evaluated the data, and wrote the annual reports. Data were compared to historic data to monitor for trends and identify any indications of contaminant or gas migration.
