FAA Skwentna Remediation and Demolition
Federal Aviation Administration
Skwentna, Alaska

As part of Bethel Services on-going contract with the FAA, we were tasked with the remediation of the Dump Number 1 area along with the demolition of various abandoned infrastructure at this remote Alaskan location. Dump Number 1 remediation was critical due to encroaching erosion from the Skwentna River.
The principal work for this project involved the following:
- excavation, transport, and disposal of the debris in and around Dump No. 1
- backfilling of the Dump No. 1 excavation
- preparation and construction of an inert, slod waste monofill
- infrastructure removal and disposal
- soil sampling and analysis to document the adequacy of soil excavation and disposal characteristics
- site restoration
A significant number of permits were required to complete this project. Permits were obtained from the State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, State of Alaska Department of Fish & Game, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Matanuska-Susitna Borough. Further, we obtained a Coastal Zone Consistency Review and Determination by the State of Alaska Department of Natural Resources.
FAA Facility Maintenance Building
Federal Aviation Administration
Vancouver, Washington
Bethel Services was contracted to investigate the leach field and dry well/sump associated with the trench-type floor drains at the Facility Maintenance Building in Vancouver, Washington. Activities included:
- exploratory excavation along the floor drain piping to identify the location of the dry well
- exploratory test pits along the former septic system leach field piping
- soil and groundwater sampling
Subsurface appurtenances encountered resulted in a decision by FAA to change the scope of the project. Bethel Services expects to return to the site during the Fall of 2010 to replace the existing oil/water separator (OWS) with a new system, excavate impacted soil from the vicinity of the OWS, remove a used-oil above-ground storage tank, and decommission, install and sample groundwater monitoring wells to evaluate the potential for groundwater contamination.
FAA Air Route Traffic Control Center
Federal Aviation Administration
Palmdale, California
Bethel Services will be performing dye tests at the FAA Air Route Traffic Control Center in Palmdale, California to determine which floor drains, sinks, and/or trench drains are connected to the storm sewer system that empties into an on-site pit. We were also contracted to identify potential contaminants that could possibly enter each drain, based on the associated area’s use and stored substances. This work is expected to occur in the Fall of 2010.
Military Munitions Response Program Site Inspections of National Guard Bureau Sites
May 2007 to September 2010
various remote locations in Alaska
Under a contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bethel Services Inc. conducted site inspections at over 100 former Alaska Army National Guard (AKARNG) training sites located in 22 remote villages in Alaska. The historical record research phase of the project involved extensive personal interviews of former AKARNG members to confirm sites initially identified during the preliminary assessment phase of the program. 73 confirmed and newly identified training sites progressed to the field site inspection phase; 33 of these training sites are currently scheduled for no further action/closure, the remaining sites are also expected to be recommended for no further action.
Field activities conducted during the site inspections included magnetometer-assisted site walks and visual surveys as well as the collection of surface soil samples for laboratory analysis. We also provided the following services, which were integral to the successful execution of the project:
- coordination with multiple agencies, native corporations, and tribal governments
- local community partnering
- use of innovative logistical approaches
Site Assessment- Yakutat Release Investigation/Feasibility Study
Federal Aviation Administration
Yakutat, Alaska
Bethel Services, Inc. performed site investigations at former and existing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) facilities in Yakutat. The project tasks were performed at former underground storage tank (UST) locations associated with two quarters buildings, the VHF Omnidirectional Reciever (VOR), and a shop building. Investigations included the advancement of soil borings, the construction of monitoring wells and the collection and analysis of soil and groundwater samples.
Delineation of impacted soil and groundwater was completed at the quarters facilities and VOR however, preliminary evaluation of the site conditions and sample analytical results at the former shop building indicated that additional soil and groundwater data was needed to delineate the extent of contamination and evaluate the risk posed by site contaminants. Additional investigation work completed the delineation of soil and groundwater contamination. Bethel Services installed 13 soil borings, of which 12 were completed as monitoring wells. A pressure transducer/data logger was also installed in two wells to monitor groundwater level fluctuations.
